22 December, 2005 - 11:49am

A recent analysis of the blogosphere by UMBC eBiquity Research Group at the University of Maryland found that 75% of pings from blogs are actually from "splogs" or spam blogs, which they say constitute 50% of all blogs! (Pings are messages sent from blog and publishing tools to a centralized network service, a Ping Server, providing notification of newly published posts or content. "Spings", or ping spam, are pings that are sent from a splog. A major issue recently has been these unjustified pings, or spings).

Two-Factor Authentication and Phishing

20 October, 2005 - 4:15pm

There's been a lot of discussion recently about two-factor authentication as an answer to the phishing problem. We agree with Derek Valada's conclusion that it's fine for the short term, but isn't a long term solution. Similarly, Bruce Schneir's perspective that phishing attacks are possible because of the inherent unverifiability of the internet, is dead on. Phishing and pharming are easy because authenticating on the internet is hard. What is needed is Identity 2.0, an online mechanism for authenticating and managing real-world user-centric identities.

Web 2.0 Wrap Up: Hope or Hype

10 October, 2005 - 11:01am

Well there's been a lot of buzz over the past week, which could be misconstrued as hype, or as I've heard a number of people phrase it "Dotcom 2.0". However, I concur with Brent Holliday that there are solid benefits to Web 2.0 that aren't just cool "mash-ups" of technology. He notes in his article "Two Point Oh No," that these benefits include: true software-as-a-service, lower costs of gaining critical mass (the "long-tail" of interconnected smaller sites of content at work), and innovation from how you assemble all of the open source, lightweight parts and constantly improve on them. We hope that people look past the cynicism and see that an "architecture of participation" really is underway [i.e. Technorati states that 100,000 new blogs a day are created!]

Web 2.0 -- The Next Generation of Software

3 October, 2005 - 3:41pm

Tim O'Reilly, Founder & CEO of O'Reilly Media recently published an in-depth article laying out the design patterns and business models of Web 2.0. He gives an interesting perspective on the importance of data, which he likens to "the next Intel Inside". He notes that every significant internet application to date has been backed by a specialized database i.e. Google's web crawl, Amazon's database of products, and eBay's database of products and sellers. He believes however that the race is on to own certain classes of core data such as location, identity, and calendaring of public events. With respect to identity, he points to "startups like Sxip who are exploring the potential of federated identity in quest of a kind of 'distributed 1-click' that will provide a seamless Web 2.0 identity subsystem."
