14 November, 2007 - 12:54pm

This 15 minute videocast with Sxip's founder and CEO and Yahoo Developer Network's Jeremy Zawodny at Defrag covers a lot of ground from Dick's open source roots to advocacy of user-centric identity. They discuss Dick's innovations over the past decade from leading the port of Perl to Windows in the mid-1990s with Microsoft, to being the first to build on the Mozilla platform with the Komodo IDE at ActiveState, to the creation of Identity 2.0 at Sxip. They concur on the state of user-centric identity being very much like the early days of the web (at the edge) with consumers just starting to become educated about the digital identity problem and solutions such as OpenID and CardSpace.

Defragging Identity 2.0

6 November, 2007 - 5:39pm

Our founder & CEO's latest Identity 2.0 keynote has generated some great comments regarding identity, trust, accountability and user-control on the web. Phil Windley of IT Conversations states, "much of what's he's saying is right in line with the reputation work my students and I have been working on. He makes a critical link to identity: identifiers bind personas together to increase trust." Dan Farber of CNET remarked, "His main thesis is that solutions, like OpenID, are necessary to “defrag” identity and bind it to past behaviors to create a world that is accountable, trustworthy and safe, and with users in control in a granular way of their online presence. Dick said the video would be available in a few weeks. Don't miss it." You bet! We'll post it as quickly as possible...

She also, however, expresses some concern with possible phishing issues. We agree there are some security issues, which is why Sxip has worked with others in the community on phishing-resistant technologies for OpenID such as Pape and Sxipper. Some of the comments we've recently received, Dave Kearns of Network World, "for me, it's the most compelling reason to install Firefox as your primary browser" and "I’d be severely impacted if it were no longer available to me. It’s really the best, if not the first, user-centric identity tool." 12 June, 2007 - 1:57pm

eWeek Labs published a great product review by Cameron Sturdevant today of using Sxip Access for SAML-based single sign-on to Google Apps. Cameron states, "There are a number of advantages to using an identity management system such as Sxip Identity with an on-demand service such as Google Apps. For one, with user authorizations piped through our in-house directory, we felt more certain about who was and wasn't using Google Apps than we did when we used the Google Apps administrative console as our sole authentication gatekeeper." Sxip's founder and CEO Dick Hardt discusses these and other Identity 2.0 issues in the first of a two part podcast on the Command Line. My Federation? On user-centrism, federation & identity

13 August, 2006 - 9:43am

For the past few months there's been a heated dialogue amongst members of the ID Gang about the definitions of user-centrism and federation. The conversation started in earnest at the Burton Group Catalyst conference, continued at the Identity Open Space meeting, and many have weighed in on the issue since then. Why is a seemingly mundane discussion of semantics important? Issues of the user's role in identity exchanges, trust, freedom, and choice have significant implications for how the emerging identity architectures such as OpenID and InfoCard are designed. And correspondingly affects matters of privacy, liability, and scalability on the Web. The following is a brief overview of some of the key points:

Gartner Finds Identity 2.0 Not Ready for Mainstream Until 2008: We disagree

10 August, 2006 - 2:54am

Gartner Research's new report "Identity 2.0 is Too Ill-Defined for Imminent Deployment" is correct in stating that the different technical approaches will hinder adoption until standards are adopted. However, we believe there are a number of recent factors leading to widespread usage soon, including: current activity underway in the identity community for interoperability between protocols (including discussions with the Liberty Alliance); Sxip's involvement with OpenID along with a host of other companies; the OpenID bounty program; Wikipedia's intention of adopting OpenID; and the efforts being made by us and others over the past year for a user-centric standard; all of which are indicators to the start of an Identity 2.0 tipping point.

23 May, 2006 - 2:01pm

ZDNet's Eric Norlin recently posted an excellent article commenting on a series of stories by Dion Hinchcliff on Web 2.0. Eric identifies the problem with this in that, "applications are creating data stores of identity information and attributes. And, by default, those applications are not interoperable with other Web 2.0 applications. Thus, we are 'silo'ing' even more identity data as we build out Web 2.0." He correctly identifies Identity 2.0 as the solution, noting that to do otherwise we are "still locking up identity data — in essence, keeping that section of its architecture 'web 1.0'."

Identity 2.0 -- It's my information, right?

15 August, 2005 - 10:01am

The recent posting in A Nation By the People and IP Addresses by Wayne Hall provides a good summary of the differences between a silo-centric Identity 1.0 web and our vision of a user-centric Identity 2.0 web. He correctly notes that when consumers gain control of their online identities that vendor identity policies will be forced to adapt, allowing for greater privacy.

Phishing for identities – how to avoid it hook, line and sinker

23 January, 2005 - 6:22pm

What is necessary to safely secure your online identity in a new distributed identity system?

In the "Sixth Law of Identity" Microsoft identity guru, Kim Cameron, discusses this issue in light of the valid concerns surrounding attacks (and potential attacks) on identity information and identity stores. Sxip developer, Andy Smith, takes an in-depth examination of these fears and how they can be addressed. He notes that the SXIP protocol addresses these problems in two ways: first, by decoupling the authentication method and second, by providing anonymity through an increased granularity of data.

Credentials, Not Business Cards

14 January, 2005 - 10:25am

On the Internet, how do you solve the problem of trust? How do you prove that someone is in fact who they claim to be?

Phil Windley's article on Lightweight Identity points to this very problem. As Phil notes, it's not an issue to trust somebody about information with little risk involved, like contact information, but there is considerable risk in trusting somebody's word on whether they have a degree or driver's license. Systems like LID don't offer a solution for that problem; SXIP does.

Gillmor Gang Digital Identity Panel Podcast

2 January, 2005 - 6:28pm

In the last Gillmor Gang for 2004, the Gang digs deeper into digital identity with a panel of experts. It begins as a Kumbaya of identity vendors and technologies, but by the second half the gloves come off.

Craig points out that everyone has built silos so far because there have been no alternatives. Is the idea of a Microsoft silo "old fashioned thinking," as Kim suggests, defending the company he joined not all that long ago? He then presents the first five of his seven Laws of Identity -- clearly well thought out and vendor independent as all agree.

Everyone also agrees that no identity solution can succeed without the cooperation and participation of Microsoft, but Dave is skeptical given the company's history in identity management. Phil points out that PKI hasn't succeded, and Kim suggests it's because PKI violated his 4th Law of Identity. And Doc suggests that digital identity needs a 'key personality' in the same way as Dave has played a lead role in RSS and blogging.

Make sure you listen to this one all the way through.
